An Employer Identification Number (EIN) is usually issued immediately after the IRS approves an online application. The IRS generally takes about 4 business days to process a faxed Form SS-4 and about 4 weeks to process one sent by mail.

EIN Processing Times

Application method Typical time Who can use it
IRS online application Immediately, if approved U.S. businesses and organizations whose responsible party has an SSN or ITIN
Fax Form SS-4 About 4 business days U.S. and international applicants
Mail Form SS-4 About 4 weeks U.S. and international applicants
Phone application Immediately during the call Generally available to applicants whose principal place of business is outside the United States

The IRS does not charge a fee to issue an EIN. Avoid websites that charge you to submit a standard EIN application.

How Fast Can You Get an EIN Online?

For most eligible U.S. businesses, the IRS online EIN application is the fastest option. If the IRS approves the application, it issues the EIN immediately online. You can then print or save the EIN confirmation notice.

The online application generally requires:

  • A business or organization formed in the United States or a U.S. territory
  • A principal place of business in the United States or a U.S. territory
  • A responsible party with an SSN or ITIN
  • The business's legal structure and identifying information

You must complete the application in one session. The IRS also limits each responsible party to one EIN application per day.

How Long Does a Faxed EIN Application Take?

A faxed Form SS-4 usually takes about 4 business days. Include a fax number if you want the IRS to return the EIN confirmation by fax. Without one, the IRS may send the confirmation by mail, which takes longer.

Faxing can be useful when you cannot use the online application, including some applications involving international responsible parties.

How Long Does a Mailed EIN Application Take?

A mailed Form SS-4 usually takes about 4 weeks. The IRS recommends submitting the application at least 4 to 5 weeks before you need the EIN.

Mail is the slowest application method. It may not work well if you need the EIN soon to open a bank account, hire employees, file a tax form or make a tax deposit.

Can International Applicants Get an EIN Immediately?

International applicants whose principal place of business is outside the United States generally cannot use the IRS online EIN application. They can apply by phone, fax or mail.

Eligible international applicants may receive the EIN by phone during the application call. Fax and mail applications follow the usual processing times.

What Can Delay an EIN?

An EIN application can take longer when:

  • The business name or responsible-party information is incorrect
  • Form SS-4 is incomplete or unsigned
  • The applicant uses the wrong fax number or mailing address
  • An LLC or corporation has not been formed with the state before applying
  • The IRS needs more information to verify the application

If you are forming an LLC or corporation, form the entity with the appropriate state authority before applying for the EIN. The IRS states that applying before forming the entity can delay the application.
